I know I’ve mentioned this in the past, but my daughter struggles with the residual effects of being born with low muscle tone. She was in physical therapy for a long time and, to be honest, if you didn’t know she was diagnosed with low tone, you probably wouldn’t notice she’s much different than any other 5 year old. However, there are still some telltale signs of her reduced strength – the way she doesn’t alternate feet going up and down stairs, her general stamina, and her lack of strength and coordinate with rotating the pedals on her bike (which is actually a giant totally awesome tricycle.) She used a similar bike at PT at the time when we got it, and the bikes there had special straps attached to the pedals that would hold her feet in place. The problem was, they were prohibitively expensive for us to buy for her bike at home. So we researched DIY options and came up with this one which works perfectly!
Very creative!
This looks pretty awesome! A Croc strap in the back there?
Yes! That’s a Croc strap in back! It works really well. We were basically trying to replicate this: http://www.flaghouse.com/productImages/image.axd/i.5875/w.1000/h.1000/xm.0/Adapted+Tricycle+Accessory+-+Foot+Pedal+Attachments_XL.jpg I think we did a pretty good job! 🙂
